Influence

After completing all chapters in this book and discussing the effects of many items on children, what do you feel is the single most influential item on children today?

I feel that the single most influential item on children today has to be the media. Most parents are working today to keep food on the table and often times to cut back on expenses parents use the television, computers, or other electronic devices as babysitters. In turn, children think that what they see and hear is the right thing to do and therefore they model their own lives after things they read, see, and hear. In the book I believe that the most influential item had to be peers as strange as that may sound. The violence, tragedy, and helplessness that occurred in this book was terrible and this unfortunantleystill exists today.

Children and Media

What are your views on children and media: specifically television, Internet and video games? When should it be allowed? How much should be allowed? How can it be monitored?

I think media around children is fine in moderation as long as it is educational and not continuous throughout the day. Internet needs to be monitored and does the video game usage. I think it should be allowed when the child can make some sort of educated decisions without total help of an adult. Basically, when they understand right from wrong and that there are consequences. I don't think more than 1 hour a day should be allowed because children need to be out running around and playing not in front of technology. Different systems have child monitoring systems and adult guard support and those are good way to start.

Best and Worst Teacher

Describe your best and worst teacher (no names please). What are some characteristics that describe your "best" teacher and what are some characteristics that describe your "worst" teacher? What memories do you have of school in general? Are your memories of content (academics) or experience (field trips, activities, etc.)?

My best teacher that I've ever had was very kind, patient, and understood how to communicate properly without being too harsh. My worst teacher was impatient, did not understand how to communicate without sounding mad, and did not care what anyone thought. The memories I have of high school was that I do not ever want to go back there because the teachers were awful assigning too much work and not explaining things well. I have enjoyed college though the teachers will help if I need it and the work is challenging but not too hard where I don't understand anything. My memories are of both academics and of activities. I was involved in a lot sports so I became close with the other athletes. I do remember my Spanish teacher in high school his class was so hard that when I was a freshman there were Seniors in my class taking Spanish 1.

Preschool

Preschool-What are your feelings about preschool? Did you go to preschool as a child? Have you worked in a preschool? Do your kids attend preschool? What type of preschool do YOU believe is best for children? Any other thoughts on education for our under 5 population?

My feelings about preschool are that I think it is great for children to interact, build relationships, and it develops social skills. I have never worked in a preschool but I have worked as a teacher's assistant in a kindergarten classroom. I don't have any children. I think that all preschools are great for kids that are approved by the state and that are meeting safety and health regulations. I think that all preschools and any child care facilities need to be closely monitored for peace of mind and safety and health of the children that are attending the school.

Top 10 Stressers

The top 10 stressors I can see have to be:

1. Finanical difficulties- This meaning that because of the economy holding a steady job may very hard to hold together especially for a family

2. Relationship with spouse or significant other-I feel that if the relationship is taking too much of your time or you are fighting all of the time this is going to cause a lot of damage

3. Single parent- Being a single parent would be extremely stressful because not only is one person fulfilling both roles as the Mom and Dad they may have to deal with ex husbands or ex wives and custody issues

4. Gas Prices- The gas prices have went down but to some it may still be a struggle to get their family to work or school each day

5. High Cost of Insurance-Health insurance has went up this is nothing new but with all of the other stresses of living worrying about your child is the last thing on your mind

6. Child care- Finding reliable, honest, and decent priced child care is hard to do these days

7. Job Stability- Layoffs may cause you and your family to homeless or have to move in with other family members

8. Family- Family that may have lost their job may be moving in with yours that would be hard to adjust to

9. New Baby- A family having a new baby especially during this economic crisis could be scary because of worrying about if your family will be alright and taken care of

10. Natural Disasters- A natural disaster may come in and swoop down taking your ''nest egg'' away and then where will you be? If your home is taken away and your family lives in the same area chances are they will experience the same dilemma.

A child of the 80's!!

Are you a child of the 80's, 70's, 60's, 50's? How was the decade that you grew up in similar to the current decade? How was it different? Discuss societal trend and possible negative impact it may have on child development in the future.

I am a child of the 80's 1986 in fact. Television wasn't as developed as much as it is today and people usually didn't spend hours upon hours sitting in front of it day after day. Sometimes and I am not saying all parents do this but the television is a babysitter for them while they are busy nowdays. I also know that in the 80's everything was a lot cheaper than they are now so a family could afford to have one of the parents stay at home and raise the children. The similarities are few but many will never change in that most children are born in hospitals now just as they were in the 80's. The only difference is they have developed Neonatal and many different other aspects to help children when they are first born. I know this is off subject a little but now ''Top Gun'' is a classic and it had just released in 1986! Ask anybody under the age of 17 and they probably have no clue what that show is. The different styles of clothing have changed for children as well and some of these outfits from the 80's still haunt children of the 80's today! lol j/k. Emotional scarring and pictures of these monstosity's are lingering around my parents house somewhere! I am glad the styles have changed. The negative impacts are a tricky subject because at the moment in time when the child is growing up they don't realize what is going to scar them for the rest of their life if it does at all. Now that we can look back 20 years as adults we can understand why it may have or didn't have. Basically we or our parents didn't know any better. The seatbelt safety laws didn't take into effect in Texas until the mid 90's. Yes children were allowed to sit up front in the car without a carseat and without a seatbelt. Sounds strange to us and unheard of but it still a fairly young concept.
